International teaching in the small Asian nation of Brunei can be an interesting experience for expatriate teachers. Brunei Darussalam, or “abode of peace” as its official name proclaims, is situated just north of the equator on the island nation of Borneo. The population is only 300,000 and it is one of the few countries still ruled by a Sultan in a monarchical style of government.

Brunei Background

The oil-rich nation reached its hey-day in the 1980s when the residents enjoyed a high standard of living and expatriates (largely in education, aviation and oil) were welcomed and rewarded. The Sultan constructed the enormous Jerudong Park theme park for the people and sponsored free concerts by artists headlined by Michael Jackson.

In the 1990s, a stricter Muslim policy was introduced with the sale of alcohol banned in the nation and tighter control placed on women’s dress. The split weekend (Friday and Sunday) was enforced in government schools and workplaces.
